Kindergarten
At the end of your child's Kindergarten year, he/she will be able to do these computer skills:
- log into a computer - find keys on the computer to construct basic words and his/her name - make a capital letter using the Shift key - use two hands on the keyboard - follow oral directions to complete a computer task - use proper mouse control (scroll, click & drag, click, double-click) - use basic Windows operations (minimize, maximize, close) - Know vocabulary like desktop, monitor, CPU, mouse, keyboard, application, program, browser - Independently use a drawing program while creating original art - Use simulation software to explore and learn (play basic educational games on the computer/Internet) - Use basic Internet websites (hyperlinks, back and forward buttons) - Know what kinds of information you should/shouldn't share online |
What can you do at home?
Encourage your child to practice mouse control skills by playing basic computer games. Talk to your child about the importance of taking care of computer equipment. Throughout the year, links to lessons games we play in the computer lab will be posted on the Kinder 2 page on this website. |
First Grade
At the end of your child's 1st grade year, he/she will be able to do these computer skills:
- Find keys on the keyboard to construct sentences and type your name - Type using two hands - Follow oral directions to accomplish a task - Use proper mouse control (scroll, click and double click) - Save a file - Open a file - Use basic Windows operations (minimize, maximize, close) - Type in a URL - Navigate a browser (back, forward, buttons and tab) - Be familiar with basic menus within applications Know vocabulary like desktop, monitor, CPU, mouse, keyboard, application, program, browser - Use the Internet to locate facts to answer questions Independently use a drawing program while creating original art - Insert photos into projects - Use simulation software to explore and learn - Compose short stories using an online tool - Compose and format longer stories using Word Processing software - Create basic presentations using tools like PowerPoint - Understand and follow copyright rules and guidelines - Know what kinds of information you should/shouldn't share online |
Typing Skills:
We will use a computer program called Type to Learn to teach basic typing skills. Mostly we will focus on using two hands on the keyboard. We will stress keeping each hand on the correct side of the keyboard and use the thumb to press the space bar. An Internet based program called Dance Mat Typing will also be used for extra practice and can be used at home. What can you do at home? Encourage your child to practice mouse control skills by playing basic computer games. Allow them to do some basic typing using a word processing program like Microsoft Word. Encourage them to keep two hands on the keyboard at all times. Talk to your child about computer safety and asking for permission before using the Internet. Throughout the year, links to lessons and games we play in the computer lab will be posted on the 1st grade page on this website. |
Second Grade
At the end of your child's 2nd grade year, he/she will be able to do these computer skills:

Third Grade
At the end of your child's 3rd grade year, he/she will be able to do these computer skills:
- Log into Web based tool accounts - Apply touch typing with key recognition - Type at least 15 WPM - Follow oral directions to accomplish a task - Read and follow technical directions - Know some basic keyboard shortcuts - Locate files and navigate file paths independently - Know how to organize files - Use basic Windows operations (minimize, maximize, close) - Troubleshoot minor hardware and software issues - Use text features and search tools (e.g. keywords, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently - Use the Internet to locate, organize, and analyze information - Independently use a drawing program while creating original art - Complete graphic organizers using software or online tool - Insert photos into projects - Download and upload photos - Use simulation software to explore and learn - Be able to synthesize information from one place to another - Compose short stories using an online tool - Compose and format longer stories using Word Processing software - Create basic presentations using tools like PowerPoint - Analyze data and report findings using tools like Excel - Have a basic understanding of copyright - Understand and follow copyright rules and guidelines - Know what kinds of information you should/shouldn't share online |

We will use a computer program called Type to Learn to teach typing skills. We will stress correct finger placement with a speed goal of 15 words per minute. What can you do at home? Encourage your child to practice typing skills at home by using various online typing programs. There are several free options available on my home page. Talk to your child about computer safety and asking for permission before using the Internet. Throughout the year, links to lessons and games we play and in the computer lab will be posted on the 3rd grade page on this website. |
Fourth Grade
At the end of your child's 4th grade year, he/she will be able to do these computer skills:
- Type at least 20 WPM - Follow oral directions to accomplish a task - Read and follow technical directions - Troubleshoot minor hardware and software issues - Know vocabulary like desktop, monitor, CPU, mouse, keyboard, application, program, browser - Know how to evaluate websites for accuracy and relevance - Identify primary and secondary sources - Cite sources - Use the Internet to locate facts to answer questions - Use the Internet to locate, organize, and analyze information - Know how to leave a useful comment for a peer - Practice good netiquette when commenting - Know how to use tools like Edmodo to discuss and share about course content - Collaborate with peers on digital products - Begin to look for solutions to real-world problems through the lens of technology - Know a system for bookmarking/saving sites - Use an online bookmarking tool to compile resources Independently use a drawing program while creating original art - Complete graphic organizers using software or online tool - Insert photos into projects - Download and upload photos - Use simulation software to explore and learn - Compose short stories using an online tool - Compose and format longer stories using Word Processing software - Create basic presentations using tools like PowerPoint or Prezi - Analyze data and report findings using tools like Excel - Use multiple programs to create a final product (i.e. insert Excel chart into a Word document, insert original art into a presentation) - Have a basic understanding of copyright - Understand and follow copyright rules and guidelines - Know what kinds of information you should/shouldn't share online - Know how to handle cyberbullies |

They will receive homework grades for completing the lessons. We will stress correct finger placement with a speed goal of 20 words per minute. What can you do at home? Encourage your child to practice typing skills at home by using their account in Typing Club. They will be expected to complete their homework assignments each quarter. Talk to your child about computer safety and asking for permission before using the Internet. Stress the meaning of cyber bullying and appropriate social media etiquette. Throughout the year, links to lessons and games we play and in the computer lab will be posted on the 4th grade page on this website. |
Fifth Grade
At the end of your child's 5th grade year, he/she will be able to do these computer skills:

Website Portfolio Each student will also be creating a website as a portfolio of work done and concepts learned at school. Students will have a login in to their website and may wish to work on this at home also. We use a free service called Weebly. What can you do at home? Encourage your child to practice typing skills at home by using their account in Typing Web. They will be expected to complete their homework assignments each quarter. Talk to your child about computer safety and asking for permission before using the Internet. Stress the meaning of cyber bullying and appropriate social media etiquette.
